stomach
The most common stomach surgery is called lipo-sculpting or, perhaps more commonly, liposuction.
What is lipo-sculpting?
The process involves the removal of excess fat from the stomach, although other areas - such as thighs, hips, face, neck, and arms - are often the target of liposuction. It is important to make the distinction between liposuction from traditional weight loss methods. It is not a replacement for diet and exercise, but rather is designed to aid in the removal of fat from areas where fat is difficult to lose through traditional weight loss methods.
Who should have liposuction?
While there is no standard age or type that is best for the procedure, there are some elements that will impact the success of the procedure. Obese individuals should not consider liposuction as a means of losing weight. Good liposuction candidates should be of "normal" weight and have deposits of fat in the stomach or other areas that will be targeted by liposuction.
Also, older individuals whose skin has lost much of its elasticity are not good candidates for the procedure, and results will likely not be as notable for these individuals. There are also some medical conditions which may prompt a physician to recommend against the procedure, including diabetes, poor blood circulation, and others.
Is it safe?
As with all surgical procedures, liposuction does carry some degree of risk. As always, be sure to carefully examine the performing physician's credentials and experience. Ask questions about past lipo-sculpting patients and experiences. Complications are not common with liposuction, but the greater the amount of fat removed, the greater the chance of experiencing some complications.
What to expect after the surgery
Liposuction may require significant aftercare depending on the amount of fat removed and the number of locations targeted. It is common for fluid to drain from the incision locations following the procedure, and on some occasions a drainage tube may be necessary to prevent fluid from collecting in this locations.
There will be some pain and discomfort following the procedure. While most physicians prescribe pain medication to help ease some of the pain, burning, swelling, and temporary numbness are common issues patients face following the procedure. Your physician may suggest a tightly fitting elastic garment to wear fin the weeks following the procedure. This is designed to prevent swelling and to help shape your skin over the new shape.
A few final thoughts ...
While it typically takes up to three months to the see the final results from liposuction, each patient should enjoy seeing some improvement within about a month. Stitches are removed within a week or two, and as swelling decreases, the new shape of the area treated by liposuction will being to form and shape as time goes on.
