nose jobs

Rhinoplasty - more commonly known as a "nose job" - is one of the most common cosmetic surgery procedures.

What is rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty involves reshaping the nose to alter the overall appearance of the face. There are a number of reasons people seek a nose job. Some rhinoplasty procedures are designed to correct birth defects or aid people with breathing problems, while other nose jobs are purely cosmetic. The appearance of the nose can be significantly changed, including increase or decrease in size, the width of the bridge of the nose, the size of the nostrils, and much more.

Who should have a nose job?

Nose jobs are relatively safe for all ages and individuals who are in good physical health. Because of issues with growth, rhinoplasty is not recommended for children. In fact, most physicians will require teenagers to wait until their growth spurts are believed to have finished.

Is it safe?

Like all other cosmetic surgery procedures, rhinoplasty is a safe procedure that does carry some degree of risk. About ten percent of nose jobs require a second procedure to make minor corrections to the nose. It is important to note that the nature of the nose is such that this can occur with even the most experienced surgeons, and most second surgeries are very minor adjustments.

Other possible complications include the appearance of small, but sometimes permanent, burst blood vessels on the skin around the nose. Any time anesthesia is used, there is the risk that there will be adverse reactions to the anesthesia.

What to expect after the surgery

Some pain is to be expected following a nose job. The most significant discomfort is likely to occur within the first 24 hours following the procedure, and can include a headache, a puffy face, and pain around the nose. Keeping your head elevated and minimizing movement during the first day can help alleviate this discomfort, and most physicians will prescribe a pain medication.

Avoid blowing your nose for at least a week following the procedure. The nose may feel stuffy during this time.

In addition, expect to see some swelling and bruising in the days following rhinoplasty. Carefully following your physician's instructions regarding cold or heat compresses can help reduce the amount of visible swelling and bruising.

The full recovery time of rhinoplasty can take several weeks, although some activity is permitted after just a day or two following the procedure. Expect several follow-up appointments after the nose job so that your physician can carefully track and monitor healing and progress.

A few final thoughts ...

Patience is key when recovering from rhinoplasty. Initially, the awkward appearance of swelling & bruising combined with the discomfort experienced around the nose can be disheartening. Rest assured, though, that as time goes on, the appearance of the nose will greatly improve and the discomfort will subside, leaving results to be pleased with.
